As is
Also called: footloose or buy to your own benefit and loss
"As is" is a legal term that places a caveat on any warranty on a purchase. It informs the buyer that the product is being sold in the condition it is currently in. In proper Dutch, this is also referred to as "sale on one's own account and damages" and "footnotes.
Products are often offered in this way at auction or clearance sales. The term is also common in the sale of used cars and real estate. In doing so, it is not uncommon for a buyer to bring an expert along during a viewing to determine hidden defects before the sale is closed.
Moreover, the fact that a product is offered "as is" does not mean that the buyer no longer has any right to warranty in the event of unforeseen defects. However, this right may be limited.
