Bias
Bias refers to a bias or distortion in the way we think, act or communicate. It may stem from our personal beliefs, preferences, experiences or social and cultural backgrounds. Bias can be both conscious and unconscious and can lead to incorrect conclusions, discriminatory behavior and unfair treatment of others.
Biases in AI
Artificial Intelligence developments are growing rapidly and are seen as a promising solution to avoid biases in decision-making. This is because a computer is not influenced by personal preferences or emotions and has the capacity to process more information than our own brain. However, this does not guarantee bias-free decisions because these algorithms are designed and trained by humans so they can be influenced by historical data. This can unconsciously lead to bias in the model and this can be amplified by the algorithm itself, leading to discriminatory or sexist outcomes. This is a troubling issue for researchers and it can also have serious implications for society. It is therefore very important to take care when applying algorithms.
