Sandwich board
A sandwich board is an advertising sign consisting of two panels, each with an image, joined together on one vertical side. The sign can be placed around a pole by attaching the "loose" sides together, for example with tie-wraps. The relatively low cost of production and installation and the high level of visibility in the streetscape make sandwich signs an effective way of outdoor advertising.
Sandwich signs come in a variety of sizes and are usually made of plastic or hardboard. They can be plastered with an advertising poster, or the expression is printed on the sign itself. As a variation on the simple freestanding sandwich board, more permanent constructions of plastic frames, which are attached to the pole itself and from which only the affixed poster is constantly replaced, also occur.
The sandwich board is widely used for local announcements, for example of a fair or event, of a political party or about an offer from a local business. The pole is usually a lamppost. Permission from the municipality is required to place sandwich signs along public roads. Often, municipalities designate one or more companies to operate the placement of advertising in public spaces.
Running billboard
Sandwich signs can also be used in other ways. Carrying the sign over one's shoulders turns a person into a walking billboard. Use in this way is usually done to proclaim politically oriented messages, or, for example, by a restaurant to advertise in a shopping area in this way.
