During my internship, years ago, we worked with 2 tools: Semrush & Moz. Even though everyone was a fan of Moz, I was in favor of continuing to use Semrush.

Unfortunately, I had lost the battle and moved on to Moz, but in recent years I have started using Semrush again.

And since I'm sure you can take your online presence to the next level with this fantastic SEO tool, I thought it was time to write a review about it.

What is Semrush?

Semrush is one of the best-known SEO tools. Which of course is completely justified when you know what the tool can do, what people have accomplished with it and how many users the tool has.

For example, did you know that...

  • Semrush has more than 7 million users?
  • Contains more than 20 billion keywords?
  • Semrush is used by Ebay and Booking.com, among others?

Actually, it is nothing but software that measures all your performance in search engine optimization, search engine advertising, social media and much more.

This data is then compared with your competitors' data, so you can do everything you can to become even more findable.

Experience it for yourself and try Semrush now below by entering a domain, keyword or URL and then clicking on the magnifying glass.

Benefits of Semrush

The biggest advantage of Semrush is that it contains everything in terms of SEO.

So think: technique, content and authority. And in case you didn't already know: those are the 3 SEO pillars.

When you take full advantage of Semrush, as a business owner you no longer need another SEO program.

The next advantage of the software is that it is all incredibly clear and logical.

Over the years, Semrush has added many features, but miraculously your project's dashboard is still uncluttered.

It works with tiles that immediately show the most important information. You don't have to wade through cumbersome menus or spend hours searching for that one useful feature.

Semrush has many other advantages, but I'm going to highlight one more. In recent years, the SEO tool has expanded not only in terms of functionalities, features and information ...

... but Semrush's design, stability and reporting have all improved as well.

Very nice when a program does not sit still and keeps improving its product continuously.

Tip: The unique thing about Semrush is that you can always try the tool for free for 7 days. You don't have to enter any credit card information. Only your e-mail address needs to be confirmed.

All functionalities at a glance

Semrush consists of 5 "toolkits.

  • SEO Toolkit
  • Advertising Toolkit
  • Social Media Toolkit
  • Content Marketing Toolkit
  • Competitive Research Toolkit.

In this blog, I will only go deeper into the SEO Toolkit. Within the SEO Toolkit, you have 5 components:

  • Competitive Research
  • Keyword Research
  • Link Building
  • Rank Tracking
  • On Page & Tech SEO

In turn, these 5 parts also have 3 to 5 tools.

At first glance, this seems a bit confusing, but there is actually a very clear structure to it.

1. Competitive research.

Semrush's competitor analysis, as the name implies, provides all the important SEO information from and about competitors. The first tool from this section, called Domain Overview, gives you a complete SEO overview of the competitors entered.

Consider:

  • Organic traffic
  • Backlinks
  • Keywords
  • Competitors
  • Anchor texts
  • Referring domains
  • Indexed pages
  • Content gap (Content that your competitor has and you don't)
  • Backlink gap (Links that your competitors have and you don't)

This can be very useful if you want some more general SEO information about your competitors (or your own website) and want to know exactly how well or poorly they are doing.

2. Keyword research

Part 2 of the SEO toolkit is the 'keyword research' section. In this section, you can really learn all about the different keywords, volumes and can even try Semrush's new 'Keyword Magic Tool'.

Perfect to start your SEO campaign with, because you will find everything you need here. For example, you will discover here:

  • Keywords
  • Volumes
  • Related keywords
  • CPC distribution
  • The trend
  • The SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages).
  • Ad Copies (The ads currently showing on the chosen keyword)
  • Difficulty of a keyword
  • And much more!

This component within Semrush can be compared, for example, to a KWFinder or MOZ's Keyword Explorer.

3. Linkbuilding

Link building is still one of the most important parts of SEO. Hence, Semrush also has four tools that can support you in link building:

  • Backlink Analytics
  • Backlink Audit
  • Link Building Tool
  • Bulk Analysis

With these four tools, you can do everything you need to do to pick up link building for your website.

Think about finding out links from competitors, examining whether links are good quality, removing bad links, looking at the anchors, the IPs, lost links, new links, follow, no-follow, TLD, country and much more.

In other words, everything your link building heart desires!

4. Rank tracking

I'm guessing you've heard of it: rank tracking. Rank tracking is tracking your current positions in the search results for the keywords you are scoring or want to score on.

The purpose of rank tracking is that you can see increases and decreases and then act on them immediately. Extremely important for your SEO.

After all, it's all about your positions in Google. Within Semrush's rank tracker, you can see the following statistics:

  • Your visibility in percentages
  • Expected traffic
  • Average position
  • Keywords and their positions (including country and device)
  • Position distribution
  • Best scoring keywords
  • Rises
  • Declines
  • Top competitors
  • SERP information
  • Landing pages
  • Featured snippets

Unfortunately, I have to warn you about the rank tracker: it can be very addictive! Higher positions mean more visitors and more visitors mean new customers.

If you are as crazy about SEO as I am, this is something you are going to keep up with on a daily basis.

5. On page and technical SEO

Actually quite strange ... Within SEO, you will always have to start with the technique and technical optimization.

After all, you don't build a house without a good foundation, do you? A good SEO strategy is no different.

Yet Semrush does not put On Page and technical SEO at the top of the list, but at the bottom. Despite that, the tools Semrush does offer you are very good.

For example, the Site audit allows you to do a complete technical check of your website that allows you to see exactly what is good and what needs to be improved. Picking up the points is then up to you.

Another tool offered by Semrush is the "On Page SEO Checker. This is a tool, as the name implies, checks all the On Page SEO elements!

Also very useful! Because with this you will know exactly what you need to adjust within the website/page to rank higher in Google.

Semrush prices, packages and features

Now we come to the most important part for us Dutchmen. The euros.

The knack. Or the dough.

What exactly does Semrush cost? Semrush ranges from $99 dollars to $374 dollars per month if you pay annually.

See.

Are you self-employed or employ a few people and your website is not your core business? Then go for the "Pro" plan.

Is the website incredibly important and therefore you can be found on many search terms? Then you will have to start looking at the "Guru" plan.

My advice to you? Take a free 7-day trial, see if you like the tool and then start with Pro!

After all, upgrading is always possible, downgrading is not.

Semrush vs. MOZ, Ahrefs, Mangools, Serpstat

As a startup, it really doesn't matter which tool you use. Whether that's Semrush, Moz, Ahrefs, Mangools or Serpstat.

Only if you want to take it more seriously, then you need to make the right choice. Ahrefs is only interesting for you if you want to do an awful lot with link building.

Therefore, this tool is often used by online marketing agencies, SEO specialists or link building fanatics. If it's time to get more serious, as far as I'm concerned, there's only one question you need to ask yourself: Do I go with Semrush or MOZ?

I can't make that choice for you and you have to do it all by yourself. My advice to you is to try both tools to see which one works better for you.

All I can do is compile the most important information for you in the table below.

*Semrush/Ahrefs do not work on the basis of keywords entered, but on the basis of data coming out of the program. So suppose you have 100 suggestions per keyword you can only enter 100 keywords.
