Because you obviously want to know if your website has bad backlinks or why your competitors rank so well. Now there are many different tools on the market that allow you to do this. And the 10 best ones I have listed for you. So see here: the 10 best tools for checking backlinks (In no particular order).

SEMrush [Free & Paid]

In terms of all-in-one SEO tools, SEMrush is perhaps my favorite. SEMrush is well represented within every part of SEO through its various functionalities.

And so are its Backlink Analytics and its Backlink Audit tool. Yes, you read that right! SEMrush has several tools in the field of link building.

SEMrush's Backlink Analytics is similar to the other programs in this list. Check it out!

backlink analytics

Here you can see all the important link building numbers. Think total backlinks, number of referring domains, authority, link attributes, backlink types, extensions and much more.

SEMrush's Backlink Analytics is the most comprehensive tool for checking your backlinks. So comprehensive, in my opinion, that it may be Ahrefs' biggest competitor.

But in addition, SEMRush also has the Backlink Audit Tool. This allows you to do a sort of "health check" of your link profile. You get information about the toxic score (percentage of 'bad' backlinks), all the information about your backlinks and you even get information about the new link attributes introduced on September 10, 2019.

The Backlink Audit is divided into the following topics:

  • Overview
  • Audit
  • Remove
  • Disavow
  • Lost & Found

So this Audit is perfect for cleaning up your link profile because you will know exactly which links to remove.

Mangools [Free & paid]

Mangools is the umbrella name of five SEO tools that you can purchase for an affordable fee (only €29 per month). Within these five tools are, for example, KWFinder and SERPChecker, as well as a handy tool for checking backlinks.

And this tool is called the LinkMiner.

With the LinkMiner you can find out all backlinks of a website, new backlinks, lost backlinks and other important information such as citation flow, trust flow, number of referring IP addresses, number of referring domains and total number of backlinks.

In addition to all this information from the domain you entered, you will also immediately see the Facebook shares, Alex rank and Link Strength of the backlinks.

SEO Review Tools is a collection of 34 free SEO tools. Ranging from technical tools, to content related programs and of course link building related tools.

And one of those link building tools, that is the Backlink Checker. With the Backlink Checker from SEO Review Tools, you can determine per page or per domain whether you want to see the backlinks.

When you enter your domain name in the Backlink Checker and then click 'Perform check'. Then you will see first:

  • How many backlinks you have
  • How many of these are follow links
  • How many referring domains you have
  • And from how many different IP addresses the links come from

Check it out!

When you then scroll down you can see all the backlinks, but you can also choose to view, for example, the most popular anchor text or the most popular URL of your website.

Ahrefs, as I wrote in an earlier blog, is the best tool when it comes to link building. It has by far the largest database, is very reliable and the information you get is very comprehensive.

A paid account on Ahrefs is just very pricey, but Ahrefs has thought of something for that. They also offer the Backlink Checker for free. Unfortunately, the free version is not as extensive as the paid version, but it's absolutely fine.

Backlinks check Ahrefs

Should the budget be there to get a paid Ahrefs account, absolutely go for it. Checking your backlinks with Ahrefs is incredibly easy. Just enter your domain or the URL of a page and you will immediately see the following information:

  • Top 100 backlinks
  • Top 5 anchors
  • Top 5 pages
  • For each backlink, the page where the link is located, domain authority, URL authority, number of referring domains, expected traffic and the anchor and URL the backlink points to.

Majestic SEO [Paid]

Majestic SEO is a link-building tool pure and simple, and is in almost every SEO expert's top five when we talk about link-building software. And compared to its biggest competitor Ahrefs, Majestic SEO is a lot cheaper.

I have already expressed my preference, but that is purely based on my personal experience. Majestic SEO should definitely have given you a chance.

Majestic SEO

In fact, with Majestic SEO you also get every conceivable piece of information regarding link building. Think of the trust flow, the number of backlinks, referring domains, referring IP addresses, historical backlinks, anchor texts and much more.

Majestic is also pushing hard with new tools and features. In my view, Majestic SEO is still a link building program, but with all the additions in recent years, you can also qualify it as an all-in-one SEO tool.

MOZ is an all-in-one SEO tool, which of course has also designed a tool that can check backlinks. Its name is MOZ Link Explorer.

The MOZ Link Explorer is free to use, but it comes with an awful lot of restrictions. So many restrictions that you are better off using the completely free variants from this list. They are much more useful.

Since a client of mine works with MOZ, I use the software on a weekly basis. I definitely like the Link Explorer. MOZ does not see all the links like Ahrefs or Majestic can, but it shows all the information needed.

Within Link Explorer (also known as Link Research) you will find the following information:

  • Domain authority
  • Referring domains
  • Number of backlinks
  • Follow / Nofollow ratio
  • Authority ratio of backlinks
  • Anchor text
  • Spam score
  • A handy tool to compare backlink profiles of websites

(And more of course, but this is broadly the basics)

SERanking [Paid]

SERanking is actually known for its rank tracker tool, but did you know that SERanking can also check your backlinks? Probably not.

SERanking's backlink analysis looks at 15 SEO parameters. And these are some of them listed for you:

  • Destination URL
  • Backlink status
  • MOZ DA
  • Country
  • Alexa Rank
  • External link
  • Added on
  • Last check
  • Referring domains
  • Domain Trust
  • Anchor text
  • IP
  • Social popularity

What I personally do find a drawback is that SERanking does not have historical data of all these figures. That is a downside in my opinion.

What else is important to mention is that SERanking does not offer a free variant. But I do get incredibly happy about the way SERanking allows you to set the price you pay yourself.

In fact, you can specify how often your rankings should be checked, how long your subscription will run and then which subscription you want. This makes it all very transparent.

As a marketer / SEO specialist, you need to know Neil Patel. Some love him and others find his tips worthless. What we all have in common is that we find his tools incredibly useful (and they're free too).

So does his Backlinks Checker. It allows you to find out the backlinks as many times as you want for free per domain or per URL. You get to see what the domain score is, what the page score is, what kind of link it is, the anchor text and much more.

You chance even select follow and no-follow links!

Backlinks Neil Patel

This article is really only about backlink tools, but I still want to give you a tip as well: use Neil Patel's other tools as well. They are free, easy to use and the data is truthful.

SEO Powersuite 's LinkAssistant is different from its competitors.

All the other tools in this list can be used online, but the LinkAssistant cannot. In fact, the LinkAssistant is part of a four tool SEO Powersuite that you need to download onto your computer.

You can see this as an advantage, but also as a disadvantage. I'll leave that for now.

Link Assistant checker

The LinkAssistant otherwise does everything you are used to from a backlinks checker. It shows you the information you want that has already passed by the other parties in this list.

You can't buy LinkAssistant separately, but that's not a bad thing at all. In fact, for a flat annual fee, you get access to all four tools of SEO Powersuite:

  • Rank Tracker
  • Website Auditor
  • SEO Spyglass
  • LinkAssistant

SiteChecker.pro is actually also more than a backlink analysis program and could be thought of as an all-in-one SEO tool. You can use it to track your rankings, monitor your site and thus see your backlinks.

But Sitechecker.pro also has a separate backlink checker in addition to its all-in-one tool. And you don't have to pay for this one!

Sitechecker pro backlink checker

Within the Sitechecker.pro you will find everything you need. Think about:- Total number of external backlinks

  • Total number of referring domains
  • Number of dofollow backlinks
  • Referring IP addresses
  • Top 5 anchor texts

How do I get backlinks?

The way to get backlinks is to approach external parties for a blog on their website. They write a blog or post about your company or product with a link mentioned to your web page in it.

When do I have a good backlink?

The best backlinks are from websites that are relevant to your page and websites that rank well in Google's algorithm. The ideal scenario is that Google does not realize you are doing link building. However, you do need to regularly check that these backlinks are still in good shape.

Difference between internal link building and external link building

In internal link building, you place links to your own Web site. Visitors can click through on your Web site to another page. With external link building, you can buy links from other Web sites. They then usually write a blog or make a post about your Web site.
