Now that we all have Christmas dinners behind us and the smoke has cleared from New Year's Eve drinks, the first figures on the market shares of the various social media channels are slowly becoming visible. Which social media platforms went "out with a bang"? And whose market share extinguished like a night candle? We are going to see!

Netherlands

Twitter7,39%7,12%
Instagram5,59%2,23%

Whereas Facebook, still by far the largest platform, saw its market share disappear like snow for a year, it seems to have found its way back up with yet another small increase in market share. Congratulations, Mark! Perhaps your intention to "fix" Facebook has put you back in good graces with your users. We are curious!

Furthermore, it also seems that we have been looking for inspiration for Sinterklaas and Christmas turkey mainly on Pinterest. While Instagram is remarkably losing market share, this platform is in fact making significant gains. YouTube and Twitter are also showing declines again, but are we really surprised? To be honest ... not really.

Europe

Twitter6,08%5,58%

When looking at the market shares of the social media channels in all European countries together, a similar trend can be observed as in the Netherlands. Facebook and Pinterest are gaining slightly, Twitter and Youtube are losing again, and Instagram is also clearly losing some ground. What is going on with the popular network anyway?

Germany

Pinterest14,95%22,53%
Twitter4,14%5,12%
Instagram2,25%1,62%

As hard as Facebook's market share in Germany rose in the summer, it plummeted again in the winter. So it was only a temporary upturn that breaks with the trend in the rest of Europe. Fully in line with that trend, Pinterest also achieves (huge) gains here and Instagram loses. Remarkably, the German market share of Youtube and also Twitter increases, which in the case of the latter can be explained on the basis of the state elections.

Belgium

Among our southern neighbors, the market shares of social media channels also follow the European trend. Almost then. Because here, too, Pinterest is gaining and Youtube, Instagram and Twitter are losing some market share. Facebook's share also loses, where it actually gains in the Netherlands and all of Europe. But it doesn't lose much. Not significantly much, in any case.

Conclusion

This round has one big winner: Pinterest. Although Facebook's market share also shows small increases in the Netherlands and across Europe, it certainly loses in a number of countries and even in a big market like Germany to a considerable extent. So we certainly cannot see those as winners. Twitter and Youtube continue to lose market share, as they do almost every quarter. Nothing new under the sun. But we should keep an eye on Instagram's decline... For now, Facebook and Pinterest remain safe choices to bet on for stable results.
